New York to Los Angeles: Best Airlines & When to Book
JFK, EWR, and LGA versus LAX, BUR, and LGB — how to pick airports, cabins, and timing on the country’s busiest transcon corridor.
Feb 15, 2025 · 10 min read
NYC–LA is one of the most competitive US markets. That means plenty of nonstops — but also wide swings in price by day of week, airport pair, and how far out you shop.
Choosing your airports
LAX has the most frequency; BUR is beloved for quick terminal access; LGB works well for parts of Orange County. On the New York side, JFK and EWR dominate long-haul style wide-body service; LGA is limited on transcon nonstops but can feed connections.
When fares are usually lowest
- Tuesday and Wednesday departures often beat Friday/Sunday.
- Post-holiday January and early February can dip sharply.
- Booking 3–10 weeks ahead is a sweet spot for many leisure trips — not too last-minute, not too speculative.
Product quality on transcon
Several carriers operate premium-heavy configurations on NYC–LA. If you are in economy, seat pitch and IFE matter on a 5.5-hour block. If you are considering business, compare meal service and lie-flat guarantee — not all “first” labels are equal.
